Still in D.C.??? Find NIRVANA!
For a truly delightful dining experience in the Capital Hill area of Washington D.C. enjoy Nirvana!
This exceptional little restaurant came to into our awareness while looking through the usual magazines left in the hotel rooms with things to do and places to go in whatever town you are in. Always interested in finding something a little different, to our delight, we found Nirvana! After mapping it, we were further delighted to discover it was in easy walking distance of our hotel.
Located at 1810 K Street NW, Nirvana is also easy to access on the Metro (on the same block as the Farragut West (orange and Blue) metro station, and only one block form the Farragut North (Red) metro station)
Stepping inside a bit timidly, we were greeted and seated politely, and handed a menu. With the formal names and terms it was a little intimidating at first until we read the descriptions of the various items and realized how tantalizing it all was.
Based on a philosophy of an ‘eight-fold path’ of obtaining nirvana, the menu is divided into eight sections, presenting a “journey through food”.
We didn’t obtain nirvana, but experienced it briefly reaching a ‘state of perfect happiness’!
Skipping the first section, Right Nectar (Thirst Quenchers), we started with the second: Right Palate and moved on through the menu to the Blissful End!
At the suggestion of the owner, who graciously visited our table and guided us through the menu, explaining the intricacies of various combinations of the eight sections, we enjoyed our journey with these delectable dishes:
Right Palate (Starters):
Vegetable Samosa (Vegetable turnover stuffed with potatoes green peas, herbs and spices)
Right Binding: (Rice and Bean Flour Dishes)
Vegetable Dosa (Rice and bean flour crepe filled with potato and vegetable curry)
Right Foundations (Rice Dishes):
Vegetable Biryani (Basmati rice cooked with mixed vegetables, herbs, cashews, and spices)
Right Substance (Curries):
Tarka Dal (Yellow split pea lentil cooked with ginger, green chilies, cilantro, and tomatoes blend of spices and flavors)
Right Tools (Bread)
Paratha (Whole wheat bread brushed with oil and cooked slowly on the griddle)
Right Compliment (Sides):
Dahi (Plain Yogurt)
Murrabba (Sweet Mango Chutney)

Well, geeze – this place looks neat enough to make a trip to Washington, D.C., just for it! Thomas Jefferson and Lincoln might have to take a back seat!
Definitely worth adding to the list of places to visit – maybe after viewing the monuments, but a DEFINITE stop on the map AND a GREAT Epicurean Experience!
